Principal Investigator: Dr. philol. Solvita Burr

Duration: 01.09.2024.-31.08.2025.

Summary:

We live in an age of information and communication technologies, and the availability of diverse texts affects how we feel, perceive ourselves and the world, and how we act.

The project focuses on text in language class and all that is done with it to help students develop the literacy necessary to work purposefully with texts, think critically, and make responsible decisions. Literacy is one of the most important skills in human growth, social life, and professional life, and thus its mastery by students is a key foundation of our society.

The aim of the project is to develop an interdisciplinary method with a set of research instruments that allows for a multifaceted, in-depth study of literacy-developing strategies in language classrooms.

The project has three work packages (WPs): preparation, testing, and evaluation of the method.

The project will result in five scientific results: an article, a conference presentation, an online seminar, a final report, and a project proposal.

The final report will contain a description of the method; sample research instruments and instructions for their use; and the pilot study’s results.

The project application for carrying out applied research will be subsequent step in researching literacy-teaching practices in language classes with an intention to improve the literacy performance of students in the long-term (e.g., literacy scores in Latvia).
