We invite you to participate in the conference commemorating the 151st anniversary of the birth of Jānis Endzelīns. The conference will take place in 2024 and is dedicated to family: ĢIMENE VALODĀ UN VALODA ĢIMENĒ / LANGUAGE IN THE FAMILY AND FAMILY LANGUAGE. Conference will be held at the University of Latvia on February 22­–23, 2024.

Abstracts

Recommended topics:

• choice of personal name, family connections evident in place names and other proper names, use of pet names, diminutives and hypocorisms in the family;
• kinship terms in ancient texts and modern lexicon, development and change of kinship terms, verbal portrait of the family in fiction and journalism;
• kinship terms across subdialects, dialects used in the family (the generational aspect), the changing role of subdialects in the family, the Latgalian written language and the Livonian language in the family, the interaction and use of the standard language, subdialects and other languages in different communicative situations in the family;
• the management and practice of language use in families in Latvia and the Latvian diaspora, public discussions about family language (childrens’ language, language use in mixed families in the Latvian diaspora, family language policy and management, representation of family languages in the media and language teaching materials, the influence of a multilingual environment on family language)

Working languages: Latvian, Lithuanian, English, German.
Duration of presentation: 20 minutes.
Please submit the application form and the abstract of your presentation (2500-3000 characters with spaces) by 15 January 2024 online.

The notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent by 1 February 2024.
After positive peer-review, articles based on the presentations will be published in the journal Linguistica Lettica.

Participation fee: EUR 50 (by 15 February 2024)

Participation fee includes participating in the conference – a certificate of participation, participant’s materials, technical support at the conference and for the abstracts of the conference, rights to submit an article, coffee breaks, copy of the author of the journal Linguistica Lettica.
